Honourable Mayor of the City of Riga,
Honourable Dr. Antony Stokes our Charge d’Affaires,
Your Excellency Mr. Ambassador of Canada,
Dear Guests of the British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia,
Dear members,
With greatest pleasure I take this opportunity to introduce to the membership of the BCCL the Honourable Dr. Antony Stokes our Charge d’Affaires. We are pleased that Dr. Stokes has expressed his interest in continuing the active engagement of the British Embassy with the BCCL and we were honoured to have him join us at our board meeting yesterday.
The BCCL looks forward to working with you. Dr. Stokes will make a few introductory remarks after which I shall proceed with the introduction of our guest speaker this morning Mr. Nils Usakovs, the Mayor of the City of Riga.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
If I compare the situation in Riga, as in all of Latvia, now to that a few years ago, I observe a remarkable change in attitude. A few years ago there was plenty of good expert advice regarding changes and improvements necessary for making better the governance of the country and of this city. You know that the BCCL along with FICIL has been actively engaged in consultations with varous authorities for many years. Unfortunately, ever so often there was little in terms of political will for the implementation of these suggestions.
Now, however, the situation has changed. There is plenty of political will to implement change. Unfortunately, our present situation is extremely difficult which makes previously abundant expert advice rather scarce, and often not applicable in our circumstances.
I invite Mr. Usakovs with one question: please let us know how we, the BCCL and Riga City Council, can work together in these conditions. I would like to assure you that the members of the BCCL intend to be part of the solution for the prosperity of Riga.
