February 26
Anita Kaleja at the BCCL Breakfast with The Economist Intelligence Unit
Good morning,
and a warm welcome to you all,

I think that the British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia could apply for the most sell-out events in the time of crisis award, if, that is, such an award was given.

Thank you all for coming,

With so many people in the audience who today are enjoying for the first time the open and friendly environment that is a trademark of the host organization of this event, I would like to say a few introductory words about the BCCL. We have had three events this year, all of which were sold out far in advance. I will name them, because they give the best illustration about the nature of our chamber - the biggest foreign chamber of commerce in Latvia if I may add. First, it was our annual Robert Burns night in January when we raised over 10.000 Lats for charity.

Then, we hosted the dinner for Mr. Nils Melngailis - his first public appearance as the Chairman of the Board of the „Parex banka”. I hope that those who attended these events enjoyed them as much as the people whose pictures you can see on our webpage. I have personally talked to many of our members who appreciate the added value of the membership because this combination of informed decision-making and the communal spirit gives meaning to what our members do best - business.

I think it is fair to say that our chamber knows how to combine things useful and agreeable. Thanks to our members we are weathering the current crisis and together preparing for a transition.

But let me mention our distinguished guests. We have here with us top government officials and decision-makers from eight ministries. I am especially glad to welcome them because the BCCL has set as a strategic goal the development of a new platform for exchanging idejas on topics of corporate and national governance.

Today, in the third sell-out event this year, I am proud to introduce Mr. Aidan Manktelow of the Economist Intelligence Unit. This has become an annual tradition for Mr. Manktelow as he addressed our members at this time last year as well.

The topic of his address this year is „Tough transition: Latvia’s prospects for emerging from recession”. Just the topic description alone raises numerous questions. Well, Ladies and Gentlemen, be patient and enjoy this chance to have a question-answer session after the speach.

Mr. Manktelow. Please!
