Your Excellencies, Dear members and friends of the British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia,
It is justified, I think, to claim that we are preoccupied with the future. Most of our daily activities are geared, in one way or another, towards shaping the future that is prosperous, safe, pleasant, and promising. We attempt to manage risks, we make plans, we take credits to finance future businesses and our choices. All and all, sometimes it seems that there is a certain imbalance in this lifestyle and drive to control the future. We should not forget about the past. And this imbalance often affects our choices. Without an honest and disengaged look towards the past we can become overly hopeful. Shaping the future might become an impossible task if we don't learn from the past. Today, as our speaker, we have Mr. Ben Nimmo whom I am proud to call my friend. He will bring to our attention little reminders from the past, and show how different past symbols and beliefs continue to dwell in our lives. To mark yesterday’s St. George’s day – the patron saint of England, Ben's topic today is "St George and European Chivalry in Riga". And perhaps it is just fitting to enjoy his address in a venue that itself serves as a pleasant and telling reminder of a lifestyle that we have not experienced ourselves, but from which we can learn in order to live our own lives better. Without a further ado, I present to you, Mr. Ben Nimmo.
