Anita Kaleja at the BCCL Monthly Dinner "Risk in Your Business is Your Business - Take it Seriously!"
Dear members of the British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia,
Distinguished Guests,
Friends,

I have great pleasure to present to you this evening’s speaker Mr. Bill Gloyn.  It is sometimes difficult to find a proper way of describing unique accomplishments in the world of insurance.  It cannot be done in the industry vocabulary - a world of its own where people actually end up making sense of most bizarre expressions such as, to start with, ‘statistical average’, ‘prevailing probable maximum loss estimate’, ‘insurance against such things as spontanious combustion’, etc.

Indeed, our speaker deserves appreciation of his accomplishments.  Hence I proceed with a description of a great career, without paying too much attention to the fact that it is in insurance.

With us today is the Chairman of the Aon European Real Estate Practice Group that has representatives from all major European territories. The Group, which he set up in 1983, specialises in the insurance and risk management requirements of the commercial property owner and developer.

He advises the British Property Federation on insurance matters. Mr. Gloyn was a member of the Advanced Study Group of the Insurance Institute of London which produced a widely acclaimed guide to Inherent Defects Insurance.

He is an external tutor for the Masters degree in Construction Law at Kings College, at the University of London. He also lectures for the Continuing Professional Development Foundation based at the University of Westminster as well as conducting in-house seminars on insurance and risk management related topics for lawyers, surveyors, accountants and other professional firms. He is a contributor to the distance learning courses of the College of Estate Management.

A Freeman of the City of London, Mr. Gloyn is also a member of the Worshipful Company of Masons, one of the City's oldest Livery Companies.  And, he has an active involvement in a number of charities associated with the property world.

It is a trend that is altogether well known in the world of insurance that following catostropies insurers and their supporting reinsurers withdraw cover for such events that fail to present them with a justifiable statistical confidence level.   Our world dramatically changes, and amongst large scale catastrophies we have to start considering terrorism, an entirely human phenomenon.  Mr. Gloyn is world-renown for the work that he has done on terrorism insurance where one needs to evaluate distractive intentions that defy reason and create havoc for whole nations and industries.

However, I think that Mr. Gloyn can learn something new in Latvia regarding the insurance against distractive intentions of people that, indeed, defy reason and  directly contribute to creating havoc.  Here in Latvia, during the election campaign that culminates this Saturday, we have seen a lot of distractive behavior.  Given your expertise and background, I would like to ask you to address, perhaps in passing, the issue of insurance against inept politicians.  It is of utmost importance to us.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Mr. Bill Gloyn.
