The Rt Hon Lord Douglas Hurd "Crisis and opportunity - a British view of the EU and NATO today"
Lord Douglas Hurd's extraordinary career, spans some of the most pivotal moments of recent history – paving the way for the signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement bringing a resolution to the conflicts in Northern Ireland, overseeing Britain's diplomatic responses to the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, as well as the first Gulf War to drive Iraqi troops out of Kuwait - and has made him one of the wisest and most respected elder statesmen in British politics.

Douglas Hurd (The Rt Hon Lord Hurd of Westwell CH CBE PC) retired as Foreign Secretary in July 1995, after a distinguished career in Government spanning sixteen years. He was Minister of State in the Foreign Office and the Home Office, he served as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 1984-85, Home Secretary from 1985-89 and Foreign Secretary 1989-1995 in the Governments of Margaret Thatcher and John Major.

During his memorable time as Foreign Secretary, under John Major, he fostered better relations with the European Community, repairing the damage done during Margaret Thatcher's Eurosceptic last years and he saw a reunified Germany enter the Community. He remains a committed advocate of free trade and the European Union and is a firm believer in the Atlantic Alliance, both through NATO and economic and political links between the US, UK and Europe.

Since retiring from Parliament, Lord Hurd has held senior positions in NatWest, Coutts & Co and British Invisibles. He is also a Member of the Global Leadership Foundation, an organization composed of former statesmen, ex-Presidents and Prime Ministers formed in order to promote good governance, democratic institutions, open markets, human rights, and the rule of law. Lord Hurd is a prolific writer, with fifteen books to his credit, including thrillers, historical biographies, and his memoirs.
