Two substantial buildings in Riga attest to the long-term presence of British business in Latvia. The first is St. Saviour's Anglican Church, built, it is claimed, on British soil used as a ballast in trading vessels. The second is the George "James" Armistead Children's Hospital, named after its founder, a Mayor of Riga of British descent.

Having contributed to Latvia's gaining independence in the early 20th Century (by sending a battle fleet which saw real action in Riga and Liepaja), Britain became a major trading partner between the wars, taking copious quantities of Latvian timber, butter and bacon.

Once again, large quantities of timber are crossing the Baltic and North Seas, but now accompanied by other commodities and specialised items, from cheddar cheese, through lingerie and knitwear, to electronics and software.

Founded in 1996, the British Chamber of Commerce in Latvia has witnessed the resurgence of the Latvian economy and the entry to NATO and the European Union. As the links between our countries grow, so does the Chamber with more events attended by more people, and a surge of growth in membership with 40% of members joining after EU accession.
